Zhong Lun Gave Speech at Canadian-Chinese Lawyers’ Forum
At invitation of Canada-Sino Legal Foundation and representing the firm, Li Hai-qing and Xiang Wei attended the first conference of Canadian-Chinese Lawyers’ Forum in Canada from October 1 to 5, 2007.
The Canadian-Chinese Lawyers’ Foundation is a private foundation originally founded by Mr. Ronald Josephson, a top Canadian lawyer, supported by the Canadian government and the law profession of Canada, for bridging the frequent communication and long term cooperation between the law professionals of both countries.
Ten Chinese law firms attended the conference as well as the top Canadian firms such as Black, Cassels & Graydon LLP, Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP, Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP, Heenan Blaikie LLP, and Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP.
The Forum had four-day meetings in Vancouver and Toronto. The guests gave introductions and speeches on certain major Chinese legal issues that concern the Canadian counterparts. Li Hai-qing gave a speech on foreign investment in real estate in China, while Xiang Wei debriefed on the new policies for China’s power industry, and the Chinese legal framework over outbound investment. Their speeches were well prepared and delivered extremely successful. Several senior Canadian government officials, well-known judges and prosecutors, as well the Chinese Ambassador to Canada also attended and gave speeches in various topics, mainly in review of the history of economic exchange and corporation of both countries, and looking forward to further development in mutual exchange and cooperation between the law professionals of both countries.
The Chinese guests visited several law firms and courts, had thorough discussions with the host lawyers and judges over the traditional legal heritages and prevailing law practices of China and Canada, as well as the ways of penetration of local legal service market in China and Canada. Many Canadian counterparts are desirous of building mutual cooperation with Zhong Lun in the future.
The Forum plays a major role in promoting mutual exchange and cooperation between lawyers of two countries. Ming Bao, the leading Chinese newspaper in Canada, made a special report on the event, and National Post, a mainstream newspaper, made the event s headline news on October 10, 2007.
The next session of Canadian-Chinese Lawyers’ Forum will be held at Beijing and Shanghai in 2008.
