Philip Zhang of Zhong Lun New York Office Appointed Counsellor to UIA President
Philip Zhang, a partner in the New York Office of Zhong Lun Law Firm, has been appointed as Counsellor to the President of the Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA). The UIA, headquartered in Paris, was established in 1927 and is one of the influential international bar associations in the world. The Counsellor to the President acts as advisor to the President, and is entitled to attend the Governing Board meeting of the UIA. According to Stephen L. Dreyfuss, President of the UIA, Philip Zhang is perhaps the first lawyer from China to have been appointed as Counsellor to the President.
The Annual Congress of the UIA, the most important activity of the year for the UIA, was held in Macau in November 2013, which was the first time that the Annual Congress has ever been held in Asia. For that reason, the Annual Congress was very interested in attracting participants from China, and the UIA is also very interested in attracting more members from China. Philip Zhang was fortunate to have the opportunity to attend the Annual Congress, where he made a speech on “Trends in Chinese Investments in U.S.", which was very well-received. The website of the UIA is: http://www.uianet.org.
In October 2013, Philip Zhang and six other partners of Zhong Lun Law Firm also attended the Annual Conference in Boston of the International Bar Association (IBA). The IBA, headquartered in London, was established in 1947 and is another influential international bar association. Philip Zhang made two speeches during the Annual Conference, entitled “Asian Investment in North America and North American Investment in Asia" and “So You Think You’re Ready To Go Public? Helping Innovative Start-Ups Make the Leap." Members usually are permitted to make only one speech at the Annual Conference, yet Philip Zhang was asked to make two speeches, a good fortune that Mr. Zhang attributes to his having joined Zhong Lun Law Firm.
