Frederick HUI

Frederick is an arbitrator as well as a Solicitor Advocate (Civil) who has attained the Higher Rights of Audience in Hong Kong. He has rights to appear in all levels of civil courts in Hong Kong.

Frederick joined Zhong Lun after working at DLA Piper for about 10 years. He specializes in commercial litigation, international arbitration, and white-collar crime. Frederick has extensive experience in advising and handling high-stake shareholders and equity related disputes, multijurisdictional commercial disputes, commercial frauds, worldwide enforcement of judgments and arbitration awards, white collar crimes and departmental summonses, and securities regulatory enforcement and investigations. Additionally, Frederick deals with high-stake, complex probate and matrimonial disputes.

Frederick frequently represents financial institutions, insurance companies, multinational corporations, non-governmental organizations, Chinese mainland state-owned enterprises, as well as major shipping companies in complex commercial cross-border disputes in courts in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, and London and international arbitration tribunals.

Representative Matters

  • Represented a leading global supplier of silicone products in Hong Kong, regarding a claim for the sale of products and the refusal of cheque payment, with the claimed amount exceeding HKD 10 million

  • Acted for a high-net-worth client to handle with a dispute over refusal of cheque payment, successfully recovering over HKD 23 million, and applied for verbal interrogation of the debtor's personnel to enforce the judgment

  • Advised clients in respect of claims of outstanding loans of over HKD 650 million arising out of various agreements including loan agreements, guarantees, and mortgages. One of the claims has been brought by way of a mortgage action in the Hong Kong courts

  • Represented a manufacturer and retail company of a renowned PRC leisure clothing brand to handle a dispute involving bank guarantees and loans in an amount of CNY 100 million

  • Acted for several companies founded by a late tycoon, philanthropist, and Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference of the PRC in a number of disputes and issues between his family members over his estate and interests in his entire business empire by which these companies are owned and controlled.  These disputes were acrimonious and attracted wide publicity in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland with the involvement of former Chief Executive and Secretary of Justice in a frustrated attempt to notch a settlement between all the parties concerned

  • Represented a distributor of optical lenses and eye-wares in both the PRC and Europe and an international fashion accessories manufacturer in the PRC in a dispute over an acquisition transaction in the PRC against a Germany manufacturer of high-quality ophthalmic lens

  • Represented Chinese clients in an arbitration in Hong Kong over a dispute in connection with the clients' obligation as majority shareholders to repurchase shares in a BVI company upon the occurrence of specific repurchase events under the shareholders agreement, involving approximately CNY 107 million
