On January 24, 2022, China Business Law Journal released its A-List 2021 in the Chinese market. Zhong Lun partners Jun Gao, Jianwei Liu and David Wang and non-equity partner Paul Li were ranked on the list.
Mr. Jun Gao’s main practice areas are compliance and anti-corruption, litigation and arbitration, M&A and corporate governance. Over the past 26 years of practicing in law, Mr. Gao has extensive experience in the field of compliance. He has represented a host of multinational companies and large Chinese enterprises on compliance cases, such as cross-border government investigation, criminal defense, internal investigation and compliance training. Mr. Gao also specializes in international dispute resolution, especially disputes involving company equity, complex commercial issues and cross-border mergers and acquisitions.
Mr. Gao has won multiple awards from international authoritative legal rating agencies. He was recognized as Leading Individual in Regulatory/Compliance by the Legal500 for two consecutive years and recommended by Chambers Asia Pacific Guide in Corporate Investigation/Anti-Corruption for four consecutive years. In addition, he was awarded Distinguished Practitioner in Regulatory by asialaw Profiles 2022, Deals of the Year by China Business Law Journal in 2021 and Regulatory & Compliance Lawyer of the Year by China Law & Practice in 2017.
Mr. Jianwei Liu focuses on foreign trade remedy cases, including anti-dumping, countervailing, safeguard measures and WTO dispute resolution. Before joining Zhong Lun, he worked on anti-dumping and countervailing matters at the China Chamber of Commerce of Metals, Minerals & Chemicals Importers & Exporters. With nearly 30 years of experience in relevant sectors, Mr. Liu is one of the earliest professionals in China to systematically study the US anti-dumping system.
Mr. Liu has been working at the forefront of responding to trade remedy cases, advising on more than 100 cases covering jurisdictions such as the United States, Europe, Canada, Australia, Japan, India, Brazil and Taiwan region. Mr. Liu has also advised the Chinese government and various associations and chambers of commerce in responding to investigations involving countervailing duties and industry damages. He counts Huawei, Sinochem, Shougang, Fangda, Wuhan Iron and Steel, Shandong Lingong, Zongshen and Benxi Iron and Steel among his clients. Mr. Liu has been recommended in International Trade/WTO Respondent by internationally renowned legal rating agencies such as Chambers.
Mr. David Wang has practiced in the international legal sector for more than 27 years and navigated scores of well-known multinational companies through complex cases with his comprehensive legal services, including foreign direct investment, corporate governance, business transactions, cross-border mergers and acquisitions, equity and contractual joint ventures, compliance, financing, asset restructuring, business trusts, dispute resolution, etc. Mr. Wang has been rated as an outstanding lawyer in Asia and recommended in M&A by international legal rating agencies for many years. He has also made to the Ministry of Justice’s list of top 1,000 lawyers specialized in international legal services. Among the typical cases Mr. Wang has handled is a client’s USD 11.6 billion acquisition of Asian logistics real estate giant GLP, which is one of the largest private equity fund acquisitions in Asia so far and the largest cross-border investment project by a Chinese company in 2017.
As an arbitrator sitting on renowned Chinese and foreign arbitration institutions, Mr. Wang has worked on many foreign-related arbitration cases. He has also provided expert opinions regarding Chinese law in overseas litigation and arbitration mandates by virtue of his expertise.
Mr. Paul Li specializes in banking and finance. He is an English solicitor with more than 20 years of experience in China and the UK and has worked for many top international law firms in China and the UK as well as a globally leading bank in the field of transportation. Mr. Li has advised a host of Chinse-funded financial institutions in the UK and many other leading international financial institutions and companies on various cross-border transactions, such as asset financing, project financing, real estate financing, overseas bonds, letters of credit and letters of guarantee, with the total transaction amount registering more than RMB 10 billion.
In addition to banking and finance, Mr. Li also has extensive experience in cases and disputes related to foreign investment in China and China’s outbound investment, asset securitization and financial products, non-performing assets and international trade.
