International Bar Association successfully held The Inaugural Asia-based International Financial Law Conference: West Meets East on Feb 28 – Mar 1, 2013 in Shanghai. Zhong Lun partner Audry Li participated in this conference and spoke on the topic of “Opportunities for Young Lawyers in the Financial Markets" with a panel of top-tier lawyers from India, Italy, Singapore and Japan; the discussion received very good feedback from the attendees.
In her speech, Audry briefly introduced the latest legal development in China’s foreign exchange market, including cross-border RMB settlement and RMB-denominated outbound direct investment. She used a couple of cross-border transactions recently closed to explain how cross-border RMB settlement has offered more options for transactions and benefited the clients, and further summarized that the new legal development and the internationalization of RMB have not only offered new learning opportunities for young lawyers but also created more business opportunities for legal profession in both the financial and the bigger corporate and M&A practice areas.
For young lawyers’ career development, Audry shared her own experience of joining government service prior to legal practice and understanding on other choices of litigation vs. chamber and specialization vs. general practice. She indicated that the new and more flexible business models and structures increasingly emerging along with the integration and globalization of China’s economy into the world will not only provide young lawyers with opportunities to explore new legal areas, but also expand the legal professions’ practice areas and require much closer cooperation between Chinese and worldwide lawyers.
