Zhong Lun Law Firm has successfully assisted Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (“CEPI") to register and establish its Shanghai representative office in China on April 17, 2020 in accordance with the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Administration of Activities of Overseas Nongovernmental Organizations in the Mainland China. CEPI will facilitate collaboration with China through its Shanghai Representative Office, and will work closely with Chinese partners in the fight against COVID-19 and promote international R&D projects for COVID-19 vaccine development.
The above project was co-led by partner Xiaoming SONG and Hengka (Henry) JI, with strong support from partner Helen CHENG and partner Allen YAM. The Zhong Lun team provided cross-border non-profit legal services to CEPI, including legal application for representative office formation, communication with government authorities, rendering legal advices for international project cooperation and record-filing, protection of intellectual property rights and vaccine development.
CEPI is an innovative partnership between public, private, philanthropic, and civil organisations, launched at the World Economic Forum at Davos in 2017, to develop vaccines to stop future epidemics. To date, CEPI has provided initial support and funding to Curevac, Inc., Inovio Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Moderna, Inc., Novavax, Inc., The University of Hong Kong, The University of Oxford, The University of Queensland, a consortium led by Institut Pasteur and Australian subsidiary of Sichuan Clover Biopharmaceuticals, Inc (China), to develop COVID-19 vaccine candidates, bringing the organisation’s total investment in COVID-19 vaccine research & development to US$39.6m.
