Zhong Lun assists the Official Signing of Shanghai Disney Project as the sole PRC legal Counsel
Shanghai Shendi (Group) Co., Ltd and The Walt Disney Company entered into the cooperative joint venture contract on November 5, 2010 in Shanghai, which indicates the formal commencement of the Shanghai Disney Resort Project. Before the official signing, Shanghai International Tourist Resort Administrative Committee and Shanghai Shendi (Group) Co., Ltd. was also formally established. Mr. HAN Zheng, Mayor of Shanghai Municipality attended the signing ceremony. Mr. Anthony Qiao, co-managing partner of Zhong Lun Law Firm was also invited to the official signing ceremony.
The Shanghai International Tourist Resort, with Shanghai Disney Theme Park being the core business which located in Pudong New Area, covers an area of 20 square kilometers. It will be the most important strategic development section in Shanghai’s next five-year-plan, together with Hongqiao CBD and Post-Expo development. The project will be developed in multiple phases with the initial investment amount in the Shanghai Disney Theme Park around RMB 25 billion.
Zhong Lun Law Firm, being the PRC counsel of the project, has been involved in the negotiation and documentation of Shanghai Disney Project since the year 2006. With the leadership from Managing Partner Anthony Qiao, a team of partners including Anthony Zhao, Gavin Zhang, Helen Zhang and Michael Chen have been key participants in the negotiation. The partners also integrated the resources in the Shanghai office in areas including real estate and construction, foreign direct investment, corporate, intellectual property and project financing and successfully completed the negotiation and drafting work after almost five years of efforts and cooperation. The Shanghai Municipal Government and the Shendi Group also speak highly of firm in being able to deliver quality work within very limited timeframe and under huge pressure. Other than the partners mentioned above, professionals involved in the project includes David Chen, Lucy Luo, Eric Liu, Alex Lu, Gu Jing and Jiang Weili.
Paul Weiss was retained by the Chinese party as international counsel and Baker & McKenzie represents the Walt Disney Company in the negotiation.
